Teaching Resource Package

A GREAT PLACE

This Teaching Resource Package supports visual arts learning focused on the concept of place using the Great Barrier Reef. It includes a Teacher Resource and Student Resource providing lesson sequences, activities and resources for four lessons aligned with Year 5-6 of the Australian Curriculum: Visual Arts. Using this package students learn about the importance of caring for the Great Barrier Reef and Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander connections to land, sea and Reef while exploring practices used by artists, including Indigenous artists, to represent their views, opinions or beliefs using the design element colour, symbolism and/or metaphor to communicate meaning.

  1. Megan,
You have done an excellent job in creating a teacher resource package that is both knowledgeable of the Australian Curriculum and shows extensive evidence of the application of teaching strategies used to teach art. You have considered students learning needs in depth and ways to provide formative feedback throughout lessons making it easy for any teacher to use this resource package.
The key artworks chosen are thought-provoking, appropriate for students age and work well to evoke students to find meaning and symbolism within them. Your appraisal of these artworks further reflects your in-depth knowledge of the visual arts as you explain, interpret and evaluate the works. You have selected appropriate questions to guide students in responding to artworks that convey meaning using symbolism.
I particularly enjoyed the stimulating introductions, particularly the symbolic Pictionary, as this is an activity that would be great for visual and kinaesthetic learners alike. The multiple ways you have connected the visual arts to other teaching areas of the Australian curriculum is impressive and reflective of great inquiry practice, a pedagogy I am drawn to. Modifications and strategies suggested to cater for the needs of different learners to promote inclusive curriculum is extensive. I like that you have included ideas for the extension of talented and gifted students in these sections as well as ideas for support.
Overall, I cannot fault your resource package it is well considered, engaging and supportive of students needs. Furthermore, it is easy to read and implement. My only suggestion is to make a comment that these lessons may take more than one to complete as they are quite lengthy. Congratulations on creating a resource package I would love to use in my future classroom.

  2. Thank you for your kind feedback Kirsty! I have used your suggestion and made a note in my package that lessons may need to be extended in number or duration to cover the learning intended. Thanks again!
